Car temperature keeps shooting up, car makes weird bubbling/grinding noise...what is wrong with it?

Kate Baune: my guess is that you need to replace the coolant with new fluid (need to do this over time). another culprit might be your thermostat (this regulates the coolant flow through your engine and radiator). check your thermostat (its usually near the water pump) and it only costs a few bucks from the car parts store and is easy to change (2 bolts on the housing and dont forget to replace the gasket). other than that, if its not the thermostat then might be a faulty radiatior (this will cost more) but i would try the thermostat and change the fluid - these are inexpensive to do....Show more

Nell Dipiero: sounds like your electic radiator cooling fan is not operating properly.-ken

Asa Soho: Make sure the radiator fan is operating. May have blown a fuse. Not sure what else it could be...

Ronald Moehr: Tanis, You mentioned a bubbling/grinding noise...I would first check if the thermostatically controlled fan (if it has one) is functioning correctly.! The second option would be to drain, flush and back flush the radiator/cooling system being alert for any foreign materials (metal/sand/debris/etc) in the cooling fluid. My third suspect would be the water pump. You said you replaced the thermostat and that there is no loss of coolant...to me, that makes the water pump suspect. When you locate and correct your problem I would like to know what it was. An acquaintence of mine had a new car that kept over heating and destroying water pumps. The dealer solved the problem by discovering sand in a block casting void. Good Luck....Show more
