Joie Libutti: You have a couple of options. There are some reputable agencies that arrange summer study programs. One is ETS. The other is to do a study abroad program, either in high school or college. Many colleges have exchange program. The Spanish sound system is very similar to the Japanese sound system- the vowel sounds are the same. But obviously, the alphabet and the grammar are very different. There are free sites online where you can learn some Japanese, and apps for the phone or iPad. It's a tough country- although people study English for at least 6 years, they are afraid to speak it for fear of making a mistake, so many won't speak to you.
