College education question?

Maritza Ebanks: I disagree, out of 100 that go to college how many have dropped out? how many have taken corses and never worked in the field they studied for? how many have taken coarses that were just for credit value? I believe in higher education for those who really are in pursuit of something worthwhile and for those there are grants, etc but free? no, If you are going to go to college have a plan, have a goal, a direction that will lead to a carrer in that dirrection. If after Graduating from a college and you get a job in that field I then would say forgive all or most of the grant as a reward for the efforts....Show more

Boris Hadsall: i am prejudiced against collegewent in late 60's, my opinion was that they were pretty much loud arrogant, a**esnot nearly as smart as they thought that they wereboth faculty and students (Syr Univ for what that is worth)got drafted, and thought that the military is a lot better at identifying and paying attention to reality ! than the college crowdlearned a trade in the military, but when i got out it meant nothing in civilian world,i did go through the civilian equivalent and got an AASi was older at that point, and comfortable enough in myself that i ignored most of the rest of the campus (small community college) but now mid 80's and very liberal2 yrs ago the same program that i went through was removed from community college, and attached to university, a thesis was added and is now a MS program and you have to have a BS to get in; and costs $45M per yearas far as i can tell it was realized that since a good living can be made by graduate, they might as well charge what the market will bear, not what it costs to produceliberal arts majors are flipping burgers because that is what their education is worthobama wants everyone to have a proper marxist reindoctrination opportunity as far as i can telli pretty well thought that the non-science, non-technical schools were pretty much BS to begin w! ith...Show more

Jed Porada: I agree. The investment in e! ducation-college level, as they do in some countries in Europe would equip the US to compete internationally. If anything is worthy of an investment as a civilization it is college for all and healthcare. Certainly we could part with some war toys to pay for it. It is certainly a crossroads for setting priorities: endless wars based on nothing or investmment in youth.

Coralie Goldsberry: Hmmm...that's a tough question. I get it depends on one's definition of "better parent". On average, people with a college education make more money, so if you think that being able to provide more opportunities to your kids is "better" then it is. On the other hand, you could have 2 college educated parents who work all day and some people would feel that having a parent stay home with their child made them "better" parents. At the same time, having 2 parents with a formal education on average will improve a child's success in school. Personally, I don't think that having a college e! ducation makes someone a better parent. But, I don't really get the concept of "I'm better than you" anyway. I think as long as you make sure your kids needs are met, and give them love and kindness, you are a good parent. If you don't, you're not. I don't believe there are degrees of parenting goodness....Show more

Hal Palowoda: I think some of this already goes on.Many large companies, however, pay to set up their own labs and research facilities because the companies want to own the patents. When they hire people, they make the employees sign contracts saying "Any valuable ideas I have while I work here belong to the company."While some high-end research can be done by graduate students, a fair amount is done by professors or those who are more advanced. Universities cannot afford to hire too many professors.I agree with you 100%, though, that it is in our country's best interest to keep education costs low and really develop marketable skills in our students.Your! line of thinking is the right kind of thinking.I think our grandparent! s saw education as an investment in the future and committed tax dollars. Now, universities are another type of "business" and there are a lot of people who make BIG money off of student loans....Show more

Jess Grizzel: Obama said that everyone should have post-secondary education. That doesn't necessarily mean that everyone should go to college. It's just a fact that high school alone no longer prepares people to take their place in a work force that offers a living wage. You can't start at a company and work your way up with on the job training like you could in 1950. You need some kind of additional training. What saddens me most is that so many kids don't even finish high school these days. Schools are teaching to the test, and if a child can't cut it, the school forces him out in order to keep their success records high with the No Child Left Behind program. In Detroit, less than 25% of kids finish high school. Obama recognizes the need to overhaul our e! ducational system. He would make college affordable to those willing to give two years of their lives in some kind of government or community service when they complete school. Your plan is one way to finance such a plan. Another would be to end the war and put our tax dollars to work at home. Did you know that 80% of incarcerated individuals are high school drop-outs? Maybe if people could get job training and then find jobs, they wouldn't have to deal drugs and rob convenience stores anymore. Maybe we could pay for education with money that wouldn't be spent on keeping people in prison. It costs us $30,000 a year to house and feed one inmate. What a shame we can't find a way to send that person to school instead before he commits a crime. No one grows up dreaming of becoming a dope dealer or a petty thief. We need to allow our kids to dream big and then help them attain their goals. So here we have a man who sees these possibilites, and he is accused of being a! socialist, a communist, a Marxist. We've just been spending our money! on the wrong things....Show more

Leontine Kreitz: This question is far too intelligent for the ilk on Y/A.Its a darn good idea though, and if you recall, Obama has stated that in return for your free/reduced rate education, you will perform community service for each year that you attended university. Its a win win, only a republican or disgruntled Hillary supporter would be against it....Show more
